City, city…

They can print statistics and count the population in hundreds of thousands, but to each man a city consists of no more than a few streets, a few houses, a few people. Remove those few and a city no longer exists except as a pain in the memory….
Graham Greene, Our Man in Havana

This is not meant to be a blog solely about cities. Nor, despite the domain name, will it be solely about Europe. And nor, at the risk of negative definition to Foucault-like levels, is it solely about Emily. But we can say that at least the initial contributions stem from observations made by Emily and Emily’s companions, in Europe in 2008 and before and maybe again soon in the future. And that Emily, in addition to having various things to say about Europe, likes cities and would like to discuss cities she has lived in or loved from the fringes. Many of them are European; all of them are only a few streets, a few houses, a few names. Which is all and more than a city should be.
